There are various reasons why an airbag control module will require servicing. The most notable being the actual deployment of the airbags. In the event of a crash the control module reads a code of “crash data stored” or something similar. This requires repair by a certified airbag control module specialist.

For some unknown reason the airbag light may be flashing on and off on the dashboard console panel. The light flash code blinks in a manner similar to that of mores code to indicate what the potential airbag problem is. The console light flashes in a single flash followed by quick succession of flashes.

If the car battery is low, a series of flashes will be sent off to reveal this is the issue at hand. During normal maneuvering of the vehicle down the road, the vehicle may undergo changes in relative voltage. This will result in an error code for the airbag system.

Do not listen to a mechanic or car dealership that leads you to believe these codes can be cleared with standard diagnostic tools. This is simply not the case.

Airbags are set to deploy one time only in the event of a crash. Following that deployment, the control module unit needs to be reset and a pair of non-deployed airbags installed. Once that has been completed, the blown airbag control module can then be repaired.

The blown airbag control module is reset by clearing all existing fault, error and crash codes. We do this by working with the SRS sensor housed in the central part of the control module. It is a process similar to rebooting a home computer.

After the resetting has been completed, the control module is returned to the vehicle. There is no need for a vehicle owner to recode the module to match vehicle codes. All relevant coding is completed before the unit is sent back to the owner. In addition, a basic test is performed to ensure the new module will deploy airbags properly in the event of another accident.

Virtually all vehicles makes and models have airbag control modules that can be reprogrammed. The only exception to this is vehicles that have sustained flood damage. Likewise, in most vehicles, the airbag control module is placed in front of or just behind a gearshift lever.

Airbag control module repair is a necessary evil of vehicle ownership. It is completed with minimal invasion to a vehicle owner. Costs are relatively inexpensive averaging between £60 and £75 Pounds. In extreme cases where parts have to be ordered, the cost may run upwards of £100. Although this is a costly venture, it is well worth having the peace of mind that all occupants of a vehicle are safe in the event of another accident.
